“Connect Cooks” teaches learners who are deaf how to read and cook recipes. Students eat a meal together each week and take a meal home on the weeks they cook. This program focuses on building foundational life skills through learning and cooking activities with complex foundational learners so they are better able to complete day to day tasks independently. These learners are Deaf and often have additional challenges such as significant language deprivation and/or disabilities. The course is based on the Alberta Health Services Collective Kitchen Manual and covers a variety of topics such as healthy eating, food safety, meal planning, etc. The course format alternates between learning sessions and cooking sessions. Topics are chosen based on the interests and relevance of the participants.
