How violence and trauma impact our ability to learn and change

Chateau Louis Hotel, Edmonton AB

Have you had a learner disclose stress or dissatisfaction with their home life? Are they in unhealthy relationships? Are they living with or are affected by trauma?

The Supporting Learning & Supporting Change workshop is for anyone who engages with adults who struggle to learn and change in the presence or aftermath of violence, neglect, or other personal or intergenerational traumatic events. This workshop will be beneficial to those who facilitate adult programs as well as family violence and trauma practitioners.

Facilitated by the nationally acclaimed speaker and author Jenny Horsman and hosted by ECALA, this workshop will review how violence and other traumatic events impact our learners’ ability to learn and grow. Participants will gain relevant and practical strategies to use with their learners and clients.

As part of the workshop, Monique Methot, Education Specialist with the Today Family Violence Help Centre, will share strategies to support learners who disclose abuse or want to learn about healthy relationships. Monique’s strategies outline a pathway to safely and compassionately support those who trust us to help them. Monique has also arranged for other Edmonton organizations that work with those who have been affected by unhealthy relationships or abuse to share information about their services.
