Lunch n Learn: Multilevel Teaching Strategies #1: Starting Points – Meeting Learners Where They Are

Multi-level classes are the norm, not the exception — and no class is ever truly single-level. This first session sets the foundation. We look at the many ways classes and learners are diverse, name the real advantages and challenges of a multi-level room, and ground the work in two ideas: Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development and Krashen’s comprehensible input +1. A short simulation puts you in the seat of a learner reading at frustration level — it’s a quick way to feel why “slightly above current level” matters so much, and why learners with emerging first-language literacy can struggle even in a well-planned lesson.

From there we turn to the most freeing idea in the whole series: you don’t have to differentiate everything. We look at how to decide when differentiation is genuinely necessary and when consistency serves learners better, and how a shared theme and shared classroom routines let one class hold several levels without becoming three lessons at once.
