This first session sets the foundation. We look at the many ways classes and learners are diverse\, name the real advantages and challenges of a multi-level room\, and ground the work in two ideas: Vygotsky’s zone of proximal development and Krashen’s comprehensible input +1. A short simulation puts you in the seat of a learner reading at frustration level — it’s a quick way to feel why “slightly above current level” matters so much\, and why learners with emerging first-language literacy can struggle even in a well-planned lesson.\n\nFrom there we turn to the most freeing idea in the whole series: you don’t have to differentiate everything. We look at how to decide when differentiation is genuinely necessary and when consistency serves learners better\, and how a shared theme and shared classroom routines let one class hold several levels without becoming three lessons at once.\n\nYou’ll leave with: a way to identify the levels and needs actually in your room\, a decision point for when to differentiate\, and a set of routines and theme-based planning habits you can put in place next week.

Telescoping tasks are built in parts — lower-level learners complete Part 1\, higher-level learners carry on to Parts 2 and 3 — and we work through how to telescope vocabulary lists\, question sets\, readings and writing tasks\, plus the scaffolds (word banks\, outlines\, glossaries\, repeated listenings) that make Part 1 achievable for literacy learners.\n\nWe then flip the approach two ways. Same material\, different task works well for listening and reading: one text\, one recording\, different things asked of different levels. Same task\, different criteria works well for speaking and writing: everyone writes the cover letter or gives the presentation\, but each level works to its own checklist. We look at making criteria transparent\, eliciting criteria from learners\, working with models — and what to do when a lower-level learner leaps past their own criteria.\n\nYou’ll leave with: a task you have already telescoped\, and level criteria drafted for one speaking or writing task you teach.

In the first half we look at how to introduce and practise one reading strategy across texts of very different levels: predicting\, rereading\, retelling\, visualizing\, using context clues\, outlining. The whole class can practise retelling in their own words even when no two learners are reading the same page. We’ll pay particular attention to what these strategies look like for learners still building decoding and foundational reading skills.\n\nThe second half tackles the question every multi-level instructor asks: what is everyone else doing while I teach one group? We treat independent time as something you plan\, not something that happens by default — journals\, independent reading\, comprehension tasks\, focus-on-form and skill-building work — so that direct instruction with one level is genuinely possible\, and the other levels are learning rather than waiting.\n\nYou’ll leave with: one reading strategy mapped across your levels\, and a bank of independent tasks matched to each level in your class.
